Sunderland have been handed a significant boost ahead of the January transfer window following the news that Manchester United are willing to allow Amad Diallo to depart on loan next month.
The 21-year-old has missed the entirety of the campaign thus far after picking up a knee injury during pre-season. He was expected to be given his opportunity at Old Trafford this season following his impressive loan spell at the Stadium of Light, where he hit 14 goals and won the club’s Young Player of the Year.
The attacker built up a fantastic rapport with the Sunderland supporters and they have made no secret of their desire to see him back in red and white. Amad himself has previously stated that he would opt for a return to Wearside should Erik ten Hag decide another temporary spell is on the cards.
According to Football Insider, the Dutchman has made the decision to allow the Ivory Coast international to depart for his third loan spell away from the Theatre of Dreams in order to play regular first team football. It is stated that Manchester United are keen to give him a chance to impress in the New Year, although he is unlikely to force his way into the starting
This is despite the 20-time English champions’ struggles, where they currently sit eighth in the Premier League and have scored just 18 goals in 18 games this season.
A host of clubs are understandably interested in his signature, with Championship promotion contenders Southampton already having made contact with United. The report also states that a number of second tier and European clubs are ready to join the race.
The Real EFL revealed in November that Ten Hag is keen to give Amad his shot in his squad, although a move to the continent is on the cards. Several Dutch clubs have expressed an interest, including Feyenoord.
Sunderland have never made any secret of the fact they would like to bring Amad Diallo back to the Stadium of Light and supporters would be overjoyed to the see the winger return. However, the departure of Tony Mowbray and the arrival of Michael Beale may play a part in the decision.
It is unknown as to whether the ex-QPR boss is as big a fan of the player as his predecessor, although he didn’t get off to the best start yesterday when he saw his side thumped by Coventry City. Although there has been a change of personnel, Sunderland’s interest is likely to remain.
