Lexington, KY — In a move that has stirred pride and nostalgia throughout Big Blue Nation, the University of Kentucky has announced plans to erect a statue of basketball legend Dan Issel outside Rupp Arena. According to ESPN’s breaking report, the statue will serve as a permanent tribute to Issel’s monumental legacy and lasting impact on Kentucky Wildcats basketball.

Dan Issel, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in program history, donned the blue and white from 1967 to 1970, setting records that still stand over five decades later. Known for his dominance in the post, relentless scoring ability, and fierce competitive spirit, Issel remains Kentucky’s all-time leading scorer with 2,138 points—a feat achieved before the three-point line even existed.

“This statue isn’t just about honoring a player—it’s about honoring an era, a standard, and a legacy that helped shape what Kentucky basketball is today,” said UK Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart during the official announcement. “Dan Issel set the tone for excellence, and now his impact will be etched in bronze for generations to come.”

The statue, designed by a team of nationally renowned sculptors and set to be unveiled during the 2025-26 season home opener, will be located near the main entrance of Rupp Arena. It will depict Issel in his classic No. 44 jersey, mid-hook shot—his signature move that tormented SEC defenders for three straight seasons.

Now a Hall of Famer, Issel’s influence extended beyond Lexington. After a celebrated NBA and ABA career with the Kentucky Colonels and Denver Nuggets, he later served as a coach and broadcaster, remaining a respected ambassador of the game.

Reacting to the news, Issel expressed humility and gratitude. “I’m deeply honored,” he said. “Wearing that Kentucky jersey was one of the greatest privileges of my life. To be remembered in this way by the university and the fans is overwhelming. I’m proud to have been a part of something so special.”

Fans and former teammates have already flooded social media with tributes, sharing memories of Issel’s legendary performances and off-court kindness. The statue will join other commemorative installations at Rupp Arena as part of a broader initiative to celebrate the program’s storied history.

With this announcement, the University of Kentucky not only honors a towering figure in its past—it also reminds the basketball world that greatness lives on in Lexington.
