Nebraska Cornhuskers Pay Tribute to Late Running Back Lawrence Phillips

LINCOLN, NE — The Nebraska Cornhuskers took a moment to honor the memory of Lawrence Phillips, one of the most electrifying running backs in program history, who passed away in 2016. Despite his troubled past, Phillips’ impact on the field remains undeniable, and his legacy as a dominant force in Nebraska football continues to be remembered.

During a heartfelt ceremony at Memorial Stadium, coaches, former teammates, and fans reflected on Phillips’ contributions to the program. A video montage of his greatest moments in a Nebraska uniform played on the jumbotron, showcasing his game-changing runs, including his legendary performances during the 1994 and 1995 national championship seasons under head coach Tom Osborne.

“Lawrence was one of the most talented running backs to ever wear the Nebraska jersey,” said a former teammate. “We choose to remember the incredible player he was and the brother we lost.”

Phillips, who rushed for over 3,000 yards in his college career, played a pivotal role in Nebraska’s back-to-back national titles, cementing himself as one of the all-time greats. However, his post-football life was marred by legal troubles, ultimately leading to his tragic passing in 2016.

While his off-field struggles remain a part of his story, Nebraska fans and the football community continue to acknowledge his talent, the joy he brought on the field, and the lessons his life teaches about redemption and second chances.

“Rest in peace, Champ,” read a tribute banner held by fans in the stands, a poignant reminder that his contributions to Cornhuskers football will never be forgotten.
