In a shocking turn of events, former Clemson Tigers star wide receiver and two-time national champion Hunter Renfrow has been found guilty of assaulting his wife, according to official court documents obtained by ESPN.
The incident, which occurred at the couple’s home in Charleston, South Carolina, on the evening of February 19th, was reported to local authorities after neighbors allegedly heard yelling and called 911. Renfrow, 29, was arrested on the scene and released on bond the following morning.
After a three-day trial that concluded this morning, a Charleston County jury found Renfrow guilty of misdemeanor domestic assault. The verdict was reached after testimony from the victim, medical reports showing bruising and minor injuries, and audio recordings from the 911 call were presented in court.
“We are disappointed and deeply saddened by this outcome,” said Renfrow’s attorney, Marcus Hale. “Hunter maintains his innocence and plans to appeal the decision immediately.”
Renfrow, known for his clutch performances at Clemson—including the game-winning touchdown in the 2017 National Championship game against Alabama—had a steady career in the NFL with the Las Vegas Raiders and later the New Orleans Saints, before becoming a free agent in early 2024.
The NFL has not issued an official statement but is expected to launch a personal conduct policy review pending the outcome of any appeal.
“This situation is heartbreaking on many levels,” said Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney. “Hunter was always a model student-athlete during his time here, and we’re praying for all parties involved.”
Renfrow is scheduled for sentencing on April 10th. He faces up to 12 months in jail and a possible fine. A restraining order has been granted to his wife, and custody proceedings for their two young children are reportedly underway.ESPN will continue to follow this developing story.
