Denis Bouanga breaks Lionel Messi’s all-time Leagues Cup record…

The reigning MLS Golden Boot winner has been among the goals this summer and is eyeing more silverware with LAFC.

Another weekend, another landmark in Denis Bouanga’s goal scoring career. The LAFC forward scored in Saturday’s 3-0 Leagues Cup victory over the Seattle Sounders, securing a spot in the semifinals for his team.

With that goal, Bouanga, 29, cemented his legacy as the Leagues Cup’s top scorer in the competition’s comparatively short history. He passes Lionel Messi at the top of the Leagues Cup scoring charts with 11 goals.

The MLS-Liga MX tournament is in its fifth year and only the second in its current 47-team format, which will take place in 2024. There used to be just four teams participating in Leagues Cup. “We have quality players, and there’s no substitute for that,” said LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo following the team’s victory on Saturday. “Specifically, Denis Bouanga, who possesses exceptional physical and technical skills, enjoys scoring goals, and is well-aware of his surroundings.”

As the final stretch of the regular season draws near, Bouanga has found his form after a slow start to the season, going goalless in his first four MLS games. In 32 games across all competitions, he has provided 21 goals and 14 assists.

LAFC is set to embark on a historic season.
After joining the Major League Soccer in 2018, LAFC has experienced remarkably steady success. They won the Supporters’ Shield in 2019 and 2022, won the MLS Cup in the latter year, and then competed in the MLS Cup once more.
