Two Illawarra Dragons Star Sign With Newtown Jets….

“Too many games being played”: The reason behind the Jets’ failed expansion bid is revealed in cryptic texts

The reasons behind the collapse of the legendary club’s joint bid with Perth have been revealed by one of the powerbrokers behind a possible Newtown Jets return to first grade.

One of the main figures in the Jets’ failed attempt at a first-grade comeback, John Singleton, revealed the reasons behind the foundation club’s decision to give up on its bid to return to the top division.

Singleton appears to be criticizing the other bidders in texts that were made public by The Sydney Morning Herald.

“Newtown’s bid from Perth” One text stated, “Norths and WA Government are playing too many games.”

In addition, Singleton stated that the team would be “better off spending time in the sun” at Henson Park, home of the Jets, rather than attempting to win back admission to first grade with the Perth bid.

Less than a month has passed since the Jets, who were eliminated from the NSWRL Premiership in 1983, were viewed as a top contender to join Perth and become the NRL’s next franchise in a joint expansion bid.

But Singleton’s remarks have all but eliminated the inner-west Sydney club from making an unexpected top-flight comeback.

According to the SMH, Singleton objected to a number of aspects of the joint-bid, such as the quantity of junior rugby league players in Western Australia, the amount of funding, and the number of television viewers.
