Sheffield Wednesday

He is gone: Good bye….

Bid farewell to a star whose “first love was always Wednesday” on Sheffield Wednesday. – Albert Quixall, RIP

The news of Quixall’s passing was tragically confirmed earlier this week, and Sheffield’s elder football fans will be in mourning at the loss of a player who graced the Hillsborough field for more than ten years.

Born and raised in Sheffield, Quixall had no plans to pursue his career elsewhere when, as a young football player, he began to show signs of promise and seemed destined for greatness.

Speaking in an interview with Keith Farnsworth many years ago, Quixall spoke of his desire to play for his boyhood club, saying, “My first love was always Wednesday… I went to school just up the hill from the ground, and was always at matches as a boy, cheering the team and my own particular favourite, Jackie Robinson.

I was told that, as a schoolboy international, I was interesting to many clubs, but when Sheffield Schools F.A. Secretary Jerry Bronks asked where I would like to go, I replied that Wednesday was the only day that worked for me, and he took me to see Eric Taylor.”

In his autobiography, Charlton, who had partnered with the former Sheffield Wednesday player following his 1958 move to Manchester United for a British record fee of £45,000, stated that the inside forward “played a significant role in my rush of goals.” Frequently, I was able to avoid an offside trap by latching onto one of Albert’s expertly placed passes.

And there was undoubtedly a lot of pressure associated with that price tag in the past.
