The history maker Hubert Davis breaks another record the man is really making waves
Peach State safety Javion Butts originally believed he’d need official visits to make his collegiate decision. That wasn’t the case — he pledged to the Tar Heels on Sunday following his most recent unofficial trip to the school
Butts, a 6-foot, 175-pound safety from Gray (Ga.) Jones County High, initially visited UNC for the Showtime Camp. He departed with a scholarship offer. In September, he was back in Chapel Hill for the Tar Heels’ season-opening win over Appalachian State. And then during the final weekend before the February Dead Period, he attended a recruiting event that included the basketball team’s win over Duke — which was followed by the students storming Franklin Street.
The latter of Butts’ UNC visits put the Tar Heels in the driver’s seat.
It’s UNC and [Georgia] Tech right now,” Butts said in February. “And then, Tennessee is third. It’s UNC [and] Tech — they’re 1A and 1B, honestly.
“That’s the thing, [Georgia Tech and UNC] are just going back and forth. Right now, [UNC] is definitely [No.] 1 from this visit. But, that’s not saying Tech is way far behind because I just went there [to UNC] so they’re No. 1, for sure.”
In response, Butts scheduled official visits to Georgia Tech (June 1) and UNC (June 15). This weekend’s commitment likely derailed those plans.
Ahead of that official visit schedule, Butts set spring trips to Tennessee (March 23), Georgia Tech (March 30), Alabama (April 1), and UNC (Saturday)
Butts becomes the seventh member of UNC’s recruiting class, which sits at No. 20 in the 247Sports Team Rankings, but will see a boost once Butts is evaluated and rated. Preceding him were four-star quarterback Bryce Baker, mid-three-star offensive lineman Trey Blue, mid-three-star tight end Logan Farrell, mid-three-star edge rusher Kamden Laudenslager, four-star offensive tackle Alex Payne, and high-three-star tight end Marshall Pritchett.
