After Jim Harbaugh left Michigan for the Los Angeles Chargers head coaching job last month, he began plucking several of his former Wolverines assistants to join him.

First it was defensive coordinator Jesse Minter and director of strength and conditioning Ben Herbert. Defensive line coach Mike Elston was next, followed by defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale. Special teams coordinator and safeties coach Jay Harbaugh also departed for the NFL, joining the Seattle Seahawks’ staff under former Michigan defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald.

All were integral in molding a national championship roster in 2023, but which one will be the toughest to replace on the recruiting trail?

Steve Clinkscale was a pretty big loss for them,” The Michigan Insider’s Brice Marich told MLive. “He had tons of ties in Ohio and they were really making inroads there. He was vital. He was a big piece in the state of Michigan, and then on top of that, down South and especially in Florida, he was crucial on those efforts as well.

The Wolverines have landed eight recruits from Ohio the past two cycles combined after signing one the previous three cycles. Michigan flipping the rivalry on the field certainly played a factor, but Clinkscale, a Youngstown, Ohio native, fortified the program’s recruiting efforts in enemy territory.

His impact extended outside of Ohio, too. The zealous 46-year-old also was listed as the primary recruiter for Grosse Pointe South five-star cornerback Will Johnson and also helped land top-200 cornerbacks Jyaire hill and Jo’Ziah Edmond the past two cycles.
