From Iconic to Infamous: Doak Campbell Stadium Lands on ‘Worst in NCAA’ List — ESPN Report Sparks Outrage Among FSU Faithful
Once hailed as one of the loudest and most intimidating venues in college football, Florida State’s Doak Campbell Stadium is now making headlines for all the wrong reasons. In a recent ESPN report ranking the best and worst stadiums in the NCAA, Doak Campbell shockingly landed on the “Worst Stadiums in College Football” list — a development that’s left Seminole fans both stunned and furious.
According to the report, Doak’s fall from grace stems from a combination of aging infrastructure, outdated amenities, inconsistent fan experience, and declining upkeep. While the stadium remains an iconic part of FSU history, the ESPN piece didn’t hold back in its criticism.
“Doak Campbell may hold tradition, but the game day experience feels like a time capsule — and not in a good way,” the report stated. “Poor seating comfort, outdated facilities, lackluster concessions, and a general need for modernization land it among the least impressive venues in college football.”
The ranking sparked immediate backlash from Florida State fans, alumni, and Tallahassee locals, who took to social media to defend the stadium’s legacy.
“How dare they disrespect Doak like that,” one fan posted on X (formerly Twitter). “This place has more heart and history than half the stadiums on that list combined.”
Others, however, acknowledged that the stadium — built in 1950 — is in desperate need of upgrades to stay competitive with the more modernized venues seen across the SEC and Big Ten.
FSU athletic director Michael Alford responded diplomatically to the report in a brief statement:
“We respect the opinions shared, but we remain proud of Doak Campbell Stadium’s legacy. That said, we’re actively planning renovations that will enhance the fan experience while preserving the rich tradition of our program.”
Indeed, plans have been in motion behind the scenes to renovate the stadium in phases, but financial and logistical hurdles have delayed major overhauls. Critics say the university has focused too much on facilities for other sports and not enough on maintaining the crown jewel of its football program.
The ESPN ranking also noted that, compared to schools like Alabama, Texas A&M, or even in-state rival Florida, FSU’s home turf feels “left behind in the arms race of college football stadium upgrades.”
With the Seminoles back in national title contention and quarterback DJ Uiagalelei drawing headlines of his own, the timing of the report couldn’t be worse — and it’s reignited a push among fans and boosters to demand serious investment in the stadium’s future.
One thing is clear: whether loved or loathed, Doak Campbell Stadium is back in the national conversation. But this time, for all the wrong reasons.
