Breaking:Josh Dobbs to back up Nick Mullens against Detroit

If something should happen to Nick Mullens on Sunday when the Minnesota Vikings face the Detroit Lions, the team’s other veteran quarterback will be called on to take over.

Kevin O’Connell said on Friday that Joshua Dobbs will serve as the backup to Mullens when the Vikings head to Ford Field on Sunday for the regular season finale.

We last saw Dobbs in the Vikings’ 3-0 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. . .the last time the team found their way into the win column. . .in which he was largely ineffective before being replaced by Mullens in the fourth quarter. Mullens would go on to lead the lone scoring drive of the afternoon in a game that matched the lowest-scoring victory in team history.

This means that rookie Jaren Hall will serve as the emergency quarterback, meaning that he will be inactive and only able to enter the game should both Mullens and Dobbs suffer an injury and are unable to play.

I wonder if the team won’t get Dobbs some snaps in this one at some point. Mullens is under contract to the Vikings for next year, but the team might want to see if it’s worth their while to bring Dobbs back to at least compete for the backup role. . .or, heaven help us, the starting job. Mullens doesn’t have any guaranteed money remaining on his contract, so if the team did want to go with Dobbs over Mullens next season they could do so with minimal damage.
