Almost Perfect Picks Department Finishes Season

Instead of complaining, my New Year’s resolution is to take joy in success and strive to get better in failures.”

I’ve never asked anyone what his or her New Year’s resolution might be, figuring something like lose weight, exercise more, stop smoking or drinking, or something as esoteric as what the Grand Geek had offered on his final trip of the SEC football season to my modest office. Rarely have I seen him not wearing a suit and tie, but he was casually dressed.

He had made his way down from the Almost Perfect Picks Department where I had noticed the Nerds in their Hawaiian shirts, backpacks and luggage piled up in the hall between the War Room and the break room. They were getting their seven-month vacation started a little early with no Southeastern Conference team making the College Football Playoff final.

And by that, of course, meaning Alabama did not make it.

All-in-all we enjoyed a very competitive season,” GG continued. “We’ll leave for a little break with smiles on our faces and congratulations to Georgia and Alabama winning their respective divisions to make it into the SEC Championship Game, to Bama for winning that 30th title, and to Georgia, Ole Miss, Missouri, Tennessee, and LSU for winning their bowl games. LSU, also, for having the Heisman Trophy winner in Jayden Daniels. Eliah Drinkwitz of Missouri for being SEC Coach of the Year.

All of the players who won individual honors. Close to home  we were particularly impressed with Caleb Downs as Freshman All-America, the growth of Deontae Lawson at middle linebacker, and for a play that will linger for a long, long time, ‘Gravedigger’ from Jalen Milroe to Isaiah Bond.”

This unusual discourse sounded a lot like a delaying tactic, but I contributed a “Happy New Year to you and the boys.”
